Aphrodite, Women’s Cell of TJC Celebrates Women’s Day
International Women’s Day was celebrated on March 12, 2012 by Aphrodite in T. John College. The event was coordinated by Ms. Shikha Tiwari, coordinator for Women’s Cell.
Aphrodite had organized a seminar which was presided over by Chief Guest Ms. Swarnalatha Iyer, Campus Director Mr. P. Shambashivan & Vice Principal Ms. Nilanjana Basu. This seminar was attended by students from various departments of T. John College.
Ms. Swarnalatha Iyer is currently working as a Senior Project Associate at “Centre for Leadership and Management in Public Services (C-LAMPS)”, where she trains educational functionaries from the Govt. of Karnataka with a view to develop leaders at the grass root levels. Thus, as educationists, she is in the process of changing the face of education in India. Ms. Swarnalatha also offers training to corporate employees, especially in the area of self improvement. Prior to this she was Head of Dept. of Psychology at Christ College for over 20 years. She is also a member of the Board of Studies at Mount Carmel College and Jyothi Nivas College, Bangalore. Ms. Swarnalatha is also a certified counsellor with special training in marital counselling and child guidance. She counsels people in distress and helps them recover.
Ms. Swarnalatha spoke on women related issues and the causes behind it. According to Ms. Swarnalatha if women stand up for themselves, be brave and have confidence, it can definitely make a change. Women empowerment does not mean violence or rebel but to have courage and feel strong. She asked the female students not to give dowry. She encouraged the students to make decisions but based on informed choices. Ms. Swarnalatha gave an interesting example on how perception can be different: some people who were asked to look outside a window said that the garden outside was beautiful but some others instead focused on the window and said the window was dirty. So what matters is how we look at life and what we choose to do with it.
